The Oldsmobile Silhouette Was a Really Weird Luxury Minivan

1 mln shikime915

The original Oldsmobile Silhouette was weird, quirky, and bizarre. It was also the original luxury minivan, and today I'm reviewing the Silhouette to show you what it was like. I am also going to show you the quirks and features of the Silhouette, and I will show you how the Oldsmobile Silhouette drives.

If I were to list my favorite reviews, it would include the Vector W8 and this - the 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette. It would be the only list, ever, that includes both the Vector W8 and the 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette.

      1. The Kombinator

review my 1999 Daewoo Matiz already. Only one in North America. I also have a Hyundai Pony.

      2. Mechotronic

      3. ilyketyorwy

@dropout0110 my gf says that to me daily... love that chic!

      4. dropout0110

I'm calling it at the 5-minute mark because my girlfriend won't stop making fun of your voice so that's the end of that

      5. dropout0110

Hey Doug my girlfriend and I are watching your videos and she just said that she can't stand you. Take that for whatever it's worth have a great day

    2. Maples01

Oh the airbag worry, how the hell did anyone survive cars without such safety devices.

    3. Bill Campbell

A good friend had the same era Lumina APV. Not only did he comment on not being able to do any meaningful work under that hood, he often joked about there being so much room under the front window, he’d be able to put both his kids there on the dashboard!

    4. Philip Jnz

I saw one of these at a junk yard a while ago and immediately was like "what in the fuck is this thing" Just caught my eye out hundreds of junked cars lol.

    5. Greg Wilczynski

Built in baby seat!! Holy shit. Why hasn’t this been adopted these Days

    6. North Ga Prepper

looks like the front end of a Disney Monorail, and thats why its cool!

    7. CBR Guy

Just by thinking that my Renault Mégane is from 96' too, makes me look at that minivan as vernacular and... bad for its time.

    8. jamesthemechanic

That third overhead compartment with the strap is for CD cases.

    9. Joseph Weisbrod

Oh my gosh that door closing sound brings back so many memories. Reminds me of going to preschool with my friends mom

    10. Joseph Weisbrod

Sheesh my car from 1941 has more power!

    11. vaderundershorts

First luxury minivan? Has there ever been a luxury minivan?

    12. woof beast

      Cadillac of mini vans

    13. Darius Jonsson

you could rear-end a motorcyclist and launch them 400 feet in the air

    14. Pex_the_Unalive Drunk

19:00 I'm pretty sure those seats fold flat, look at the cup holders built into their backs...

    15. Justin Mabe

0:00 Felt the wind off that one haha

    16. Davey Sanchez

Doug, I love watching your stuff. Very informative and entertaining. Wishing you doubly the success - Davey

    17. Francis Marino

      *Cyber Van reveal!!!!*

    18. Pex_the_Unalive Drunk

Styling of 3!? How!? It wasn't ugly, it was beautiful, agressive like a Badger and futuristic! Like a Lamborghini mated with a minivan, like a shuttle on Star Trek! If it's speed matched it's styling...would you still call it ugly? And they sold well & are still daily drivers in places like Iowa...yup...the fictional birthplace of Captain Kirk.

    19. Posey McQueen

This was awesome!👍👍. I remember going on a college road trip in 1997 with some classmates to our first “conference” 8 hours away and one of my classmates drove us in her parents’ Silhouette! Considering my parents NEVER bought new cars (i.e. I took my driving test in my mom’s 1980 Cadillac Brougham),, I did indeed feel like I was riding in new car luxury! 😹😹👍👍👍

    20. Nair Byad

2 minutes in, i was asking myself "is this the guy who owns a ford gt?"

    21. Justin Angle

We had a 99 shilouette. it had the small tv screen that you could hook stuff up to. I remember on road trips we would hook up our n64 lol.

    22. Ad

      classic

    23. xevious2501

look like a star trek shuttle craft

    24. crownvic interceptor

Doug Demuro. All you do is cut down vehicles you don't like and praise vehicles you like.. well maybe i like that car and you dont. i have watched everything you post and you are a joke just a jay leno wannaba, half the the stuff you talk about is total bullshit .

    25. Big Noob

    26. PandasEatingCheese 11

      Looks like a van I'd draw in 3rd grade😂😂

    27. Ty Thornburg

In 1990, my graduation year, the 3 GM vans debuted. I positively loved these vehicles, namely the Silhouette and TransSport. Listed it in my "senior year memory book" as my favorite car. They were, unfortunately, underpowered until 3800 V6 was introduced for the vans. The 3.1 liters were subject to transmission issues, too. I had a college professor who owned a red Silhouette. Because he had seen my personal car was ALWAYS clean and shiny, he asked I detail his. I remember the most difficult part was CLEANING THE WINDSHIELD! AHHH! I very much liked the 1997 versions of the Van's, too. Their crash test results, being kind, were positively terrible (watch ALsel videos of TransSport and Montana crash test...IIHS, I believe).

    28. King Austin

20:21 I actually have a cutlass supreme coupe (bottom left)

    29. Paul Whitehead

Qould have made a great cabin for a cab if it was sealed off from the back with a bullet resistant wall

    30. Eric Phillips

Minivans and vans didn't have double rear doors for a while because there was a crash test problem they needed to resolve.

    31. J T

My uncle had one. He got it after the divorce. The windshield was amazing it was so long. Rip uncle Tim!

      1. J T

@Jane Appleseed yup, lol! I should clarify he got this van & she got the nice car.

      2. Jane Appleseed

        THE DIVORCE *DUN DUN DUNNNN*

    32. Ultra

plot twist: all the cars he reviews are in his own collection, he owns them

    33. Caleb Hohneke

I had a luxury Chevy Lumina van back in high school/college (Pretty much the same vehicle)....I loved that van hahaha. Took it on many road trips with my friends who also loved the vehicle. There was just something special about that van. We called her the Ghetto Beast. I miss you Lumina

    34. Tony Wellington

what an atrocious piece of SHIT this thing is

    35. Mustang Mark

What's weird is reviewing an oldsmobile silhouette...

    36. gmott2010

I had one of these when I was a teenager, I loved that space shuttle!

    37. GIT-FO

      10:47 - burns a little oil, eh?

    38. loving me some outdoors

We used to call this hideous things, "windshield vans"

    39. samuraimonkey

I had a book when I was younger that showed cool ass passenger car setup like train passenger cars linked up to this van. Would've been a nightmare on the road.

    40. Gabriel Gonzalez

Doug; the dust buster vans were not the only GM minivans. Did you forget that GM also had the Chevy Astro van / GMC Safari?

    41. fredutrecht

I have had the Pontiac 1994 version that is very similar to this one. The car had a 3.8 V6 engine with LPG installation. I drove 145.000 km without any problems with normal maintenance. New price in the Netherlands with LPG was around 38.600 (!) euro's. It was the fastest (0-100kmh) minivan available at the time, and what I can remember he drove backwards really fast ;-) I found the automatic level control behind a plus. Downside was indeed the tip of the door and the strange position behind the wheel. Nice car, had fun with it. Sold it after 4y for 18.500 euro's Thanks for the review.

    42. sek929

Literally burst out laughing at how deep the dashboard is. I'm not as tall as Doug anything that would have fell down there would be lost to time.

    43. Rolodex Propaganda

      That van hard 🔥🔥🔥

    44. Guy Mathers

This is what the Tesla minivan is going to look like.

    45. dean reynolds

I bought a used 98 chevy version with the Buick 3.8 and auto air shocks, loved it made many trips to Florida with it ,and the best part was the plastic lower panels , never any rust, wish I still had it.

    46. Turtle Head

      It's a lumina van

    47. visionsofpromise

Before the cyber truck, there was a cyber van

    48. Paul W

I had a 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette from 2007 though 2013. and I had quite a few problems when I had it. I never did like the way they were built when they were first introduced. They looked like they were manufactured from another planet. I didn't like the way the engine was set up, it looked like everything was compacted into the vehicle.

    49. Brian Fisher

This van reminds me of the Monorail from Disney World...

    50. dll1183

There's another quirk that Doug didn't mention about the "Dustbuster" triplets: They have a galvanized steel spaceframe supporting exterior body panels made from composite plastic, like a Saturn or a Pontiac Fiero.

    51. clomads

      Please review an Aerostar!!!!!

    52. Seegal Galguntijak

Again, the Renault Espace also had these triangular front side windows.

    53. Seegal Galguntijak

Actually, the Renault Espace had that design since 1984: www.motoringresearch.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/01_renault_espace.jpg Although I like the MK2 Espace even better, with its cute "wrap-around" style side mirrors: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Renault_Espace_front_20080215.jpg

    54. Seegal Galguntijak

I remember we had the Pontiac Trans Sport minivan in the early 90s, and I loved the wedge shaped form of it. It looked so pretty, only the Renault Espace came close to it.

    55. Pulseczar1

It's funny how Doug doesn't think anything is stylish if it has too many straight lines. He seems to forget that people don't all like the same thing, and that certain things were in style during different time periods. There were probably a lot of people that thought this van was stylish. Beauty exists only in the eye of the beholder.

    56. Saturday Projects

Reminds me of the late 90's Chevy Montana Van.

    57. Joelwee1028

Ah, the dust buster van! My family had a 1995 Silhouette for years, as did some friends of ours. The weird power door noise always creeped me out as a kid. My parents eventually traded it in for a 2002 YukonXL.

    58. 480JD

The built in carseat was a cluster, worked at a bodyshop, lady came in had a minor accident, insisted the child seat be replaced because thats federal law or at least a standard practice for insurance companies. Naturally it was crazy expensive and the van totalled out.

    59. Fully Restored

Doug the type of guy to get more excited over a minivan than a Ferrari

    60. bloodycardinal

A few details. The built-in car seats - afaik some Volvos had them, though I'm not sure if they still use the design. The triangle windows in the A-pillars - the Renault Espace has had them since the 80's.
